Fabulous or Hideous?

So there's this girl at work who's having a baby. I don't know her that well. She doesn't know if it's a boy or a girl.

There's this yarn I've had a ball or two of for a while, I've been really itching to make something with it, as it a self patterning yarn that I really like the effect from.

I dabbled a little putting them together the other night, by beginning a February Baby Sweater.

It started out ok. In fact, one side looked amazing.

The other side, not so much.

Together, the fronts just looked a wreck.

But the back! The back was coming out beautifully.

I was tormented between the force of the elements of this project; some fabulous, some hideous. The recipient is neither a knitter nor a friend, so I was unsure whether a layman might think the sweater vile. I had horrible visions of the cardigan being ridiculed behind my back, the work unappreciated and unloved. Plus, there's some pink in it - the recipient is very conservative and of a background that might find even a sprinkling of pink unacceptable, should the sprog turn out to be male.

What to do. What to do. An idea formed.

And, a little nip and tuck later, may I present to you the February Doggie Sweater!

(I'll just go and buy her one of those tshirts that say 'my mum rocks' or something.)

She doesn't need the Tshirt - her look says it all. Too quoote!

THAT dog. .. needs a cuddle. particularly in that sweater. Too cute man! I think it looks better on the dog than it would on the baby anyways - the white fur offsets the colours beautifully!

m-h, I think I've mislead you.

The T-shirt will be for the girl who is having the baby, not for the dog. God forbid.

O knew the T-shirt was for the girl, because the cardi looks so cute on the dog! Though I am not so sure the dog thinks so. Does s/he get cold?? Will s/he wear it?? Oh the vagaries of the self-striping yarn!!!

How the hell did you get Storm to sit still long enough to put the sweater on, let alone get him to pose?!? Mind you, he looks quite satisfied with himself!

is that cute little thing called Storm? Oh my. Love it. The poses!!! What were you paying her to get those looks? It looks like it was made for her.

I only knit for babies if I
A: love them or B:get paid for it.

all other babies get a purchased present because life is too short to worry about offending the parent or caring if they wreck or hate the gift.

as for Storm - I have to rememeber that just like a baby, I can adore it, I don't have to take it home...
so cute!

Love the February dog sweater!!

If you do want to do a litle knitted thing, the bib from the Mason Dixon book is good - I made one for a friend and she loves it (although she is a knitter, so maybe that makes a difference)

So adorable! At least you found someone that will truly appreciate your effort!

I think it's fabulous! but it's too good to give to a co-worker you're not sure will appreciate it, ask me how I know…

It looks lovely on Storm, a perfect fit.

Haha, February Dog Sweater indeed! Great solution - despite Storm's obvious misgivings, I think its perfect!

And I have the same philosophy as Jussi re baby knitting. I have enough angst gifitng my knitted things to loved and other knitters, let alone muggles!

I think Storm looks adorable! And I say that the mother will never know the difference if you give a bought gift instead.

The dog cardigan is a stroke of genius!

I try and tailor the knitted baby gifts to the mum ... no point buying lovely yarn and spending lots of time knitting something that will get tossed in the washing machine and never look the same again! That t-shirt sounds like a great idea.

OMG - that is too funny. I'm sorry the baby gift didn't work out the way you wanted - but it looks fabulous on Fido. How adorable.

Just heard from Michelle that you have the Colormart Silk (Foxglove). I am using the same yarn for my Pi shawl & unfortunately ran out of yarn. If you have any left & does not need it, please let me know - annlim@iinet.net.au
Thank you
