An affair in Paris

No I didn't have one, but since I've been back I've been knitting a little romantic cardigan for my niece, with a very puffy elbow length sleeve and a forties pin-up style silhouette.

It's the kind of cardigan that looks as though it might have been worn by a very stylish and lovestruck girl in Paris in the forties, and then kept in pristine condition for a very long time, only to be re-discovered with rapture by her very stylish and lovestruck young grand-daughter in the present day.

The cardigan has a deepish ribbed bottom, cinching a tiny forties waist, the body is fuller than you might expect on a cardigan of this size, giving a blouson effect to the top of the garment. Simple lace panels flank the pearl button front.

The sleeves are short-rowed in, a technique which I adore, and they were deliberately kept wide and full until the elbow where the ribbing brings it sharply into a slim opening.

And the neckband is finished with an i-cord bind off, another fabulous technique.

I knit this cardigan in the delicious fibrespates scrumptious that I bought from iknit in London. This is the most wonderful yarn, a little crunchy from the silk but with a softness and weightlessness that you'd expect from such a luxurious blend. It won't be the last time I use Scrumptious - it really is scrumptious!

Anyway, enough of me crapping on. Take a look at it - enormous thanks to Kashaya for sitting still long enough to model this cardigan, it only took a week to pin her down!

If I had any confidence in my ability to re-size this garment, I'd write a pattern. But I don't, so I don't even know why I mentioned it really. Seems stupid to blog about something you're not going to do. You don't happen to know anyone do you? Email me if you do.

For my next trick, I am trying to replicate something I bought in Muji.

Looks fab, you did a great job on it. And yeah if Vogue can publish one-size patterns, you can!

if i didnt know you, i would agree with the one size pattern, but i do know you probably cant even remember that much. thats because the fact that you just made this up as you went along means youre like some kind of knitting genius. seriously, i have not seen anything more perfect for the intended recipient ever. its gorgeous.

While loving everything about this, I particularly love the sleeves. Well done clever knitter!

See, now I had to real your post in full to realise the pictures weren't from the 'published' (commercial) pattern with the model from some fancy agency. Gorgeous! Scrumptious sounds worthy of further investigation.
